V

als, the third piece of the tango trilogy at its most traditional and popular style, brought to you in a compendium, summarised in a 2 hour workshop

Many call it "Tango Vals" while others "Vals Cruzado" but amongst Porteños, it is identified simply as "Vals Criollo", vulgarly "Argentine Waltz". The word "waltz" meant "dancing turning round". Its origin can be found around 250 years ago in Europe, where it was qualified as an indecorous dance.  In the late 700s, in Austria's Vienna, it reached its peak of popularity.  There, it became the "wedding dance". In the American continent, the waltz started to become a standard in the ball rooms circa mid 1800s, extending its popularity throughout the continent.   The huge wave of European immigrants brought their music and dance to Argentina in the 1870s. Thus, the first Argentine born generation grew up enjoying or even modifying the old tunes. That era coincide with the origins of the Argentine Folk.  The first generation of Argentine composers included feelings of their birthland to the European waltz, however preserving its style and allowing the newly born "Vals Criollo" to become a rhythm which allowed to be danced.
